The first half of 2014 sets in the new LEGO Movie theme have arrived. Simply put, they look amazing! There are 13 of them (!), with four of them having 2-in-1 builds. So I think this will keep me busy reviewing for quite a while!
The movie comes out 7th February, so the scenes depicted in these sets don't make a lot of sense yet. It does seem that there are several themes represented in these sets (e.g. Western, Castle, City, etc), so I'm guessing the movie will cover a bit of every theme LEGO does these days.
As I review each set, I will link to them from here.
The ones that immediately grabbed my attention are the four 2-in-1 sets. Each of these has some innocuous looking vehicle that gets rebuilt into some kind of flying/chasing machine. I can't quite figure out who are the good guys and who are the bad guys in these sets though :) I *think* the flying machines are actually good guys and are chasing the black cube robots which are chasing innocent victims in each scene, which inadvertently makes the flying machines look like bad guys too.
All photos can be seen on my Bricksafe pages. I will be continually adding more over the next couple weeks!
70800 Getaway Glider
This small set has a Western theme. There are three minifigures: the main character Emmet, Sheriff Not-a-robot, and Deputron. It looks like Emmet is escaping them via some kind of steam-punkish hand-glider. This appears very briefly during the movie teaser trailer. Unfortunately, my box got a little damaged during transit.
70801 Melting Room
This small set contains three minifigures - Emmet, Wyldstyle, and Robo SWAT. It looks like the bad guys are trying to use a laser type weapon to get the big red brick off Emmet's back. Again, this box got a little damaged during transit. Only the two smallest ones seemed to suffer though.
70802 Bad Cop's Pursuit
This is a medium sized set, with two minifigures. Emmet and the spinning-head-goodcop-badcop guy from the trailer. There are a couple of crocodiles and a platform with some train tracks on it, but the main draw is the police vehicle which I think is a water craft.
70803 Cloud Cuckoo Palace
This is a small set, and a little weird. I didn't see anything like this in the trailers. There are three minifigures (Emmet, Wyldstyle, Executron), as well as two creatures made from standard parts (Unikitty and a snail). It is a very colorful set, with lots of pinks, greens and yellows. Without seeing the movie, the scenes in this make little sense!
70804 Ice Cream Machine
This medium sized set contains three minifigures (Cardio Carrie, Ice Cream Jo and Ice Cream Mike). It is a 2-in-1 set with a great looking Ice Cream Truck that turns into some kind of flying popsicle-slinging death machine. It also contains one of the black robot cubes that I think are controlled by the evil villain.
70805 Trash Chomper
This medium sized set contains three minifigures (Garbage Man Dan, Garbage Man Grant and Gordon Zola). It's another 2-in-1 set with a garbage truck (that I think looks much better than the 4432 set from 2012), that turns into a flying green thing with lots of teeth. And another black cube robot. Both machines have movable parts controlled by turning a cog manually.
70806 Castle Cavalry
Another medium sized set, this one in a Castle theme. It has three minifigures (Sir Stackabrick, Gallant Guard and Sharon Shoehorn). So... the castle transforms into a flying machine. I can't even begin to imagine the movie scene that called for this :)
70807 MetalBeard's Duel
This medium set has a slightly Heroica/Ninjago feel to it. There are three complete minifigures (Frank the Foreman, Robo SWAT and Skeletron), and the head of a pirate which seems to be controlling some robotic exo-suit with a canon for one arm and a shark for another. Pretty cool stuff :) The other robot is a big black cube who I assume is bad, making the Pirate the good guy? In any case, definitely a good looking set.
70808 Super Cycle Chase
This is a larger set (not the biggest). There are five minifigures - Emmet, Wyldstyle, and three Robo SWAT bad guys. It has two vehicles, with the "Super Secret Police" car looking pretty bad-ass. We see the orange cycle in the trailer, but not the police car unfortunately.
70809 Lord Business' Evil Lair
This is one of the two big sets. It has 6 minifigures and another of those weird pink kitty's (Emmet, Vitruvius, President Business, El Macho Wrestler, Pa Cop and Ma Cop). I'm guessing it's part of the final showdown in the movie, as it has the bad guy in his big-boy evil pants, ray guns, big intimidating machines, and a pink unicorn/kitty thing.
70811 The Flying Flusher
Another medium sized 2-in-1 sets. Three minifures included are Plumber Joe, Alfie the Apprentice and Dr McScrubs. So the first model seems to be a nice looking van with "Joe's Plumbing" on the side, and (in what I can only imagine is a first for LEGO) a portable toilet. This combo can be rebuilt into a flying van/toilet that shoots things. Luckily these things are only plumbing accessories ;)
70812 Creative Ambush
This medium set has a Western theme, or I guess a "Lone Ranger" feel to it. There are four minifigs: Sudds Backwash, Rootbeer Belle, Kabob Bob, and Executive Ellen. The main model contains a bi-wing plane with lots of interesting additions such as canons, dart boards, a and a piano. I'm guessing it was transformed from an actual Saloon. There is also a flying Kebab (sorry, Kabob) shop and another black cube robot.
70813 Rescue Reinforcements
This is the second large set, with five minifigs. There is Blaze Firefighter, Blacktron Fan, Fabu-Fan, Hank Haystack and Robo SWAT. We have another very cool looking exo-suit which looks like it transformed from a fire truck. While having a shark for an arm in 70807 takes the "cool factor" award, I think the mech in this set is better overall. There is also a helicopter of sorts, possibly a transformed house. The back of this box also indicates that there is a special code printed on one of the parts that you can use to unlock content in the to-be-released video game.
Are all of these scenes really in the movie I wonder? The trailers don't really give you much indication as to what happens, and there's very little in these sets that I recognise. There are so many transforming objects, there must be some pretty crazy action going on in the movie. The movie is scheduled for release on 7th February, with these LEGO sets being available from 1st January.
I'm also surprised at the number of sets being introduced here, and this is only for the first half of 2014. I guess though that the making of a movie is a big investment, so it makes sense that there would be a lot more sets to take advantage of it. However, most of these sets look to have some great models in them and would be great even without the movie. Once it's released, the scenes should make more sense!
For those minifig collector fans, the most common repeated minifigs in these sets are:
- 6 x Robo SWAT
- 5 x Emmet
- 3 x Wyldstyle
There are also eight of the black cube robots of various size. Given how many sets have them, it's strange we don't get more than half a second of them in the movie trailer!
