I have just finished building this and it is a great model. However, I am unsure of the value of having, and paying for, the sophisticated gear system. There are no instructions on 'what it does/how it works' and it nearly all hidden away from view, so it has no display value. It is clear from above that some are not impressed with it, anyway.

What would have been great, was for the bulk of the externals of the car to have been built on the subframe developed in Box 2. That way, releasing a few of the red pegs would allow you to lift the whole lot clear and see the detailed internals. A project for a Rebrickable genius perhaps?!

This is the most insightful review of this set I've read so far. Well done!

Absolutely the best review! The essence of insight. This should set the standard for all reviewers.

    Hi Nathan

    > From the Rebrickable stats, there are already over 100 users who own the set, so it would be great to hear from them - was it worth it?

I have just finished building last night. All that you mentioned in this very detailed reviews are correct. It is quite painful to hear the sound jamming gearbox using the default building instruction (of box 1). However, there is a nice discussion thread in Eurobricks Lego Technic/Mindstorms forum on how to mod the set to minimise frictions, "ensuring" 90 degrees position of the two (O+) orange beams, adding HoGs (for steering and for gear changing), etc. I have some of the (growing) suggestions there and those ideas have improve the technical factor of this set by a lot. I have plugged in L motor to replace the fake engine and although it crawls at 1st gear and unable to move at 4th gear due to weight (will try 2 or more XL next time), it can now shifts correct gear sequence 1->2->3->4 blocked->3->2-1->blocked smoothly and only jam rarely (needs more tinkering to ensure near 99% reliability?).

I suspect by 1 August 2016, the proper worldwide release of this set, there should be enough "alternative building instructions" especially for box 1 available for wider audiences. Google "Lego 42056 mod" and you will likely be given link to that Eurobricks forum.

My wife and 5yo daughter say it is a very good looking Lego car. I agree. My 2yo son unfortunately just want to rip all the flimsy bits of this car off (e.g. the big transparent dish for front light, the flex axles, etc) every time he touches it.

PS: When building it, I realise that this set actually has "more" black color parts (the inside parts, not just the black 2L pins) than orange (the outer skin), so I think my combination of black parts now is the most diverse (rebrickable does not yet have a feature to show total of parts based on color)... That means I can now build some other smaller sets with uniform... that is, black color (if I re-brick this Porsche :O... quite reluctant though) instead of having rainbow-ish color.

Thank you for making every new step clear. It's good to know how to fix the problems that comes with this car. :)

Mine has been on backorder since 1st June. The website hints that something is being fixed. I wonder if it will be different?

    Impressively detailed review.

While some of the Cons I agree with, I find several of the listed Cons in this review (and other reviews too) to be unfair.

1 Not many new parts :
One of the greatest sets ever (UCS Millennium Falcon) had 1 new part - the radar dish. It's not a con.

2 Uncommon body color limits possible usage of parts :
How can a new colour ever be released if it attracts complaints like this? Also contradicts #1.

3 A lot of features of the real car are omitted :
That's like complaining the Lego helicopter doesn't really fly. There has to be a cutoff somewhere.

    Great review!
I don´t own this set yet, but I want to buy it in near future, when it is on sale....

Try John Lewis, they were selling it for £70 off RRP and free delivery to the Waitrose store near you.
