B Model link from main model

Question

Can anyone tell me if there is a link from a top level set to it's b models? I thought it should appear under alternative builds but it seems that only MOCS and subsets are shown there currently.

This might be a bug but I suspect it's more likely that I'm just missing something obvious so thought I would ask the question here first.

As an example

https://rebrickable.com/sets/31052-1/vacation-getaways/ has a B-model https://rebrickable.com/sets/31052-1-b1/camper/ but I can't find a link from the main set's page to this b-model.

Similarly https://rebrickable.com/sets/8258-1/crane-truck/ has a B-model and the B-model has two sub-sets. The Sub-sets appear under the alternative builds tab for the B-model but I can't find a link to the B-model from the main set.

By the way, if this addition would be implemented, it would allow the system to calculate the "set versatility", the number of other models that can be build from a particular set, and that could be used to create a versatility top 10, the 10 sets with the highest number of alternate builds. Me thinks LEGO would be very interested in that kind of research... -smile-

Well, I know which set would win. This dude has made 114 alternate models for 1 set so far

Wow, that is amazing! Alas, RB has zero alt build for that set.
Perhaps we should divide the number of alt build by the average price of the set: would be an nice indicator of value.

Any comments about the suggestion?

FYI, Nathan re-imported the formerly (in RB v.2) active B-models and the links for their instructions, as well as he fixed the B-model listings under the "Alt models" tab, handled separately. For example: https://rebrickable.com/sets/6846-1/tri-star-voyager/#alt_builds

For the moment, it will do the job very well, but the recent questions are still there. (Back of the box photo, possible new category...)

Thanks for the info Simon, I will run through the links.

@plastic.ati I shortened the links you had in the notes for 6881-1, but I'm wondering if they are really necessary now that Nathan has them in the alternate tab.

As you mentioned, there is still the question of a new category.  I've always felt that to label it a b-model, it needs to have official instructions from lego.com.

@thea Thanks for the shortening, and I think You're right, that we wont need this kind of linking at the main model. However, I will submit the B-models first, and then transfer the shortened links there.

I am just wondering if the photo of the back showing the B-model could work as a set image, instead of my photos. What do you think? An example (red rectangle shows the exact B-model):

Fantastic! Looks great! Job well done!

PS @plastic.atithe links to your build instructions (using the above example) do not work...  Might want to check those.

@Simon I will need to re-upload some BIs, as my older links seem to be broken. However, the set 6801 works well :)

Great, I think that was pretty much exactly what I was looking for back in March. It'll be much easier for me to check which B models already have inventories when I build a 3-1 Creator model now.

Hi, Vokhev,

As far as I know: no. And I agree, an additional checkbox could be very useful. I will add this as a Suggestion tomorrow, but first I need to clean up the B-models: several have been submitted as "Normal Sets", and that has be changed first.

Take care,

Simon
