My first alternate model of 42099. The Off Road Truck features independent suspension, 4 wheel drive, steering with Ackermann geometry, tilting cab and fifth wheel. It has 2 gearing options. In high gear it climbs around 40°, in the low gear it can crawl up to 53° slopes, sideways it holds up to 44°.

Milan, many thanks for your efforts! I think proper drivetrain is great, however, the lack of central diff winds up the transmission and slows the vehicle  - so my question is whether you introduced Ackermann geometry to compensate negative effect?

I also built it, and found this was a problem. Not much you can do with just the pieces from 42099, although if you had a spare differential and a little patience I'm sure you could make a space to fit it.

I was thinking about central diff as well... But actually came across much more simple solution: I believe most of the real-life off-road trucks have part-time 4WD, so in this case I would just remove the connection from front axle to make it rear-wheel drive! And when I need I can easily engage front axle back - mimicking real life behaviour of such vehicles. Shame there are parts in the set to make a proper switcher. Have just tried planet wheel hubs in idle mode - and they seem to spin fairly easy, so should not be a problem in 2WD setup. Central diff would be a more elegant solution, but I think part-time is more appropriate here for long turns - with Ackermann geometry this should be a fun!

Thank you. It would have been earlier if I did not take the vacation right after finishing the model.
