    You will need 3 motors, for drive, steering and working devices (pneumatic pump etc.). So the control+ app and the 2 motors from top gear race car will not be sufficient. You would need to create your own app to control this configuration. I am not sure, if the new control+ motors would easily fit inside the Unimog. The control+ hub would replace the power functions battery box. They may do with some modifications. 

    So if you have the power function motors, I would build it this way.

    The pneumatic tank is not essential for function. It will work without the tank, but if you have one, it works better and looks really cool!

    Yes, that is normal for this design. In reverse gear there is a direct connection from drive train to the engine bypassing the gearbox, so the revolution of the engine does not bother which gear (1-4) you select. Hi-Lo switch keeps active, because  you would like to have a low reverse gear in off road situations.

    But there is a side effect that you observed. The 1-4 gearbox is still connected to the drive train even in reverse. There is no torque transmitted, but all the axles and gears are spinning in idle mode. Depending on the gear selected they spin faster and cause more friction.

    You can avoid this effect, when you select 1st gear when you drive in reverse gear. In a real car you also would not switch directly from 4th gear forward to reverse. So slow down to 1st gear, then select reverse, and it works fine.

    v1.3 reduces this effect by slowing down the revolutions inside the gearbox, but the effect is still there.

    If you keep in the same gear, there should be no difference in friction inside the gearbox between pushing the car forward or backward. Did you check the wheels for rubbing anywhere?

    I suggest to dismount body and chassis parts in larger modules. When building v1.3, follow the instructions and carefully compare every step with your modules. Many of them kept unchanged, but some needed some changes.
