Introduction

The Mandalorian. I've already talked about this phenomena in our review of the 75317 The Mandalorian & The Child. Ever since the first episode, I've been hoping for a minifigure of The Child, and we finally get one in the 75292-1 Razor Crest. As of writing, Rebrickable has 36 Razor Crest-related MOCs, so it is definitely a ship that people want to build. Let's hope that LEGO can deliver.

There has been a bump in the road for this set. Just a few weeks before the release, news came out that there is a trademark issue with the name Razor Crest. A company in Germany turned out to have the trade-mark, and was not willing to let LEGO use the name for the set. At the last moment, the set got renamed to The Mandalorian Bounty Hunter Transport. Since that is a bit long, I'll just keep referring to it as The Razor Crest.

The Set

Relive bounty hunter The Mandalorian and the Child’s battles against Scout Trooper and other enemies with The Razor Crest (75292) LEGO® Star Wars™ building toy for kids. This brick-built armored transport shuttle features a cargo hold with opening sides that double as access ramps and carbonite bounty elements inside, a dual LEGO minifigure cockpit, spring-loaded shooters, escape pod and more authentic details to inspire creative play.

Role-play adventures
A challenging build for ages 10 and up, this 1,023-piece starship construction kit includes 5 collectible LEGO Star Wars characters, including new-for-August-2020 The Mandalorian and the Child LEGO minifigures. It’s great for role play and combines with other LEGO Star Wars sets for even more action.

The Build

The build starts with the stormtrooper and the Mandalorian. The base of the Razor Crest is build.

In bag 2, we find The Child. It is such a cute little creature. The head is made out of rubber, so the ears can move. They won't stay in place though. I noticed something weird in the 60476 Brick Special 1 x 1 with Clip Horizontal. When used in combination with other parts, there's nothing wrong. But when you put 2 of the same part on top of each other, it is a very tight fit, and you hear a nasty squeak. I noticed the same in the 30237b Brick Special 1 x 2 with Vertical Clip [Open O Clip] while building the 21163-1 Red Stone Battle. It feels like these parts use a different blend of plastic, maybe for extra strength in the clip?

The ship gets another layer.

In bag 3, we find IG-11. We continue on the top layer of the Razor Crest. The structure with the Technic Beams looks a bit wobbly, but is surprisingly sturdy.

Bag 4 adds a nose and the side panels. On the inside are the poor fellows (or dangerous criminals), who are frozen in carbonite.

The panels can open up to reveal the inside. Which is a bit empty for my taste...

Bag 5 finishes the main body of the Razor Crest. Greef karga is also introduced. In the top of the ship comes an escape pod. Fun detail: The windscreen is held in place by an unusual connection. In the ship is a hinge plate, while the windscreen has a plate with clip. The clip fits between the hinge teeth, but is not connected by a SYSTEM connection. This way, it won't fall out easily, but you can still open the cockpit.

Bag 6 adds the engines as finishing touch. They are pretty complex, but end up very good-looking.

Normally I don't like shooters on Star Wars models. They often disrupt the flow, and they are only there for added playability, and I only display the ships. I understand the need, since LEGO is for all ages. In the Razor Crest, the shooters are well-hidden in the engine struts. With a simple cheese-slope brick, they can be hidden. BTW: The blue brick in the back is supposed to be covered up by the 2 curved bricks on the left of it. Never build without coffee!

Conclusion

So, I really, really want to like this set. Anything coming from such a great show, gives very high expectations. But... This one falls short. Don't get me wrong: it's a decent set. It captures the Razor Crest, and it looks good. But somehow, I expected more. It feels too simple, rushed. The inside is mostly empty, with a few stickers trying to give it an interior. The model will work as a display piece, I guess, but it's too minimal for me. Maybe my expectations were too high, but they are certainly not met. If it was any other ship in the Star Wars universe, I would be fine with it, but not with the Razor Crest.

There is of course also positive things to mention: I like the construction of the engines. They manages to let the round engines flow into the bodywork. I love the hollow structure of the model. There is a lot of room inside, easy to access, while the model still stays sturdy. If only they had utilized this room better. The build experience itself was engaging. There are some clever techniques used, going in all directions. The instructions were no spoon-fed as well. So, I suppose it depends on your own expectations and desires if this is a set for you.

There is a good selection of minifigs, with The Child as an ultimate Got-To-Have. Big question now is, do I keep him/her/it with the Razor Crest, or will he/she/it go into my baby-collection?

I think the best part of this set is just how much usable interior space you get. I like the exterior design too!

That was my first thought when building it myself. It’s a real playset with lots of storage what I appreciate.

Congrats for the great and useful review. I own the set (I ordered it since the first announcement) and I'm very happy with it. Yet I very much agree with your critical views- to me the most disappointing aspect is the interior. Just too empty. Also there is no proper seat for the child in the cabin. I just modified a couple of pieces. I'd like to see in the cabin the handle that the child likes so much (the one with the metallic ball). The overall build is simply fantastic, extremely sturdy and with a nice resolution of the attachment for the two engines. In contrast, the attachment of the landing gear is just too simple and much shorter than in the original ship. Despite all this, I've really enjoyed building it, and it looks absolutely great. Highly recommended.

Overall, I nice kids model for the size if a little expensive. Although as ryan1172 mentions some areas could be better designed. A proper hinged cockpit would be better. The cargo bay needs to be longer as the closed ramp should reach much closer towards the end of the ship. The Technic I beams are a bit of an eyesaw, but probably needed for rigidity. The engines should be moved back slightly, and higher to give that swept back appearance, where the inlets would be better with 1/4 Arch Brick 3 x 3 with Cutout (65617).

Just a question out of curiosity: what's that with the name 'Razor Crest' on the box picture and in the official set description? Is the trademark name issue limited to Germany or is it worldwide? Or are those early press presentation pics from before the name change? Otherwise it would be quite a bold move by TLG...

I can't find an exact scope of the renaming. A quick search on lego.com, changing to different regions, it seems the EU all uses the new name. UK and USA use Razor Crest, and the other continents ant rest of Europe are all different per country.

Thanks for looking it up, I was too lazy to actually do it myself... Still a bit tricky though, and again (after the Osprey thingy) a sloppy mistake from TLG in the trademark/branding/licencing area. It does not seem that hard to me to do a trademark check on a new set name in an early stage. Unless that would have to be done publicly, than it would be a giveaway to copycat brands...

It had nothing to do with LEGO. Disney messed up and didn’t get the copyright for the term and a German guy realized and got it first. It’s Disney’s term to protect that they then license to LEGO. I’d bet Disney made a significant apology to LEGO for making them have to repackage and remarket the set last minute.

Ah yes, makes sense that way. Even more surprised though that a company like Disney didn't get their act straight, but hey, we're all human after all...
Still a nice set, although when I first saw some speed build vids of it I already had the feeling that it was a squarish core covered with pretty panels and not much more... But hey, that's where the RB community comes in right

So that is what all of the extra pieces are for...
I like the windshield connection. They used the same mechanism for Clay's Rumble Blade back in 2016.

I think the set is a wonderful playset and also decent enough for displaying it. Also, it is much bigger than I expected. What I really like is the integration of the spring shooters which are perfectly fitting in

My biggest critic is the handling of the ship, although the stable bild it is hard to grab on and make “
flight maneuvers”. For a child I think it could be hard to play with it without ripping of siteplates.
Also, the could have changed the Stormtrooper with another Minifig from the series. I think a “bad guy” in this set isn’t necessary.

I think one of the reasons why the set "feels rushed" or has a less good interior is because of the limited amount of time LEGO had to deal with. Because of all of the secrecy surrounding the Mandalorian at first, LEGO probably didn't know many details about what to put in the set for a while, and then had to rush the design process to get it on shelves in time.
I'm hoping for another edition of this set once more seasons come out, with more details and references to the show.

There's a couple of books on the workings of the relationship between LEGO and the brands, and how that evolved, improved over the years. One of these is Brick by Brick by Bill Breen, from 2013. In the case of Star Wars, since they've been working together for so long, they're very close and share information really early on in the process. And that might actually be the problem, that the design of this is based on initial artwork rather than the final design that ended up in the show after many internal reviews at Disney. For me, it doesn't really pick up the rusted, falling apart look of the show. +1 for a bigger set in the coming years, aimed at adults.

I agree with FunnyTacoBunny, in the babies collection now. What is more, if it is a set that is more intended to be a display piece than to be otherwise used as you suggest, there is no point in leaving the minifigs with it.

this set could really use some more detailing inside the cargo hold such as the random boxes and nets on the floor, the weapons cupboard and the child (baby yoda)'s small room

I really wanted to like this set as well, BUT, I felt it could have been better designed as well. There were elements of it that they cut corners on, like the landing gear(how they attached them, and where), and the internal structure of the engines could have been stronger(I actually changed a few things as I was putting it together).
