Introduction

Last year, the Harry Potter theme introduced a new sub theme, consisting of modular sections of the Hogwarts castle. The first wave consisted of 3 sets (4 if you count 76395-1 Hogwarts: First Flying Lesson. The set has the same connection points as the other modules, but is not listed as part of the series), with the addition of the Gift With Purchase 40452-1 Hogwarts Gryffindor Dorms (reviewed here). I've already reviewed the largest set 46389-1 Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets, and with the other sets also in my collection, it's only logical to have a look at the first set of the 2022 wave: 76398-1 Hogwarts Hospital Wing, and see how it fits in with the others. The trio Harry, Hermione and Ron have frequently visited this wing after another fight, accident or curse.

In June, 2 more sets will be released.

The Set

LEGO® Harry Potter™ Hogwarts™ Hospital Wing (76398) is bursting with magical play possibilities for kids aged 8+, from caring role play in the infirmary to time-travel adventures in the clock tower.

Perfect for Harry Potter fans
Young witches and wizards join Harry Potter, Ron Weasley™ and Hermione Granger™ in a versatile playset based on a memorable scene from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban™. Inside the Hogwarts Hospital Wing are 3 beds, a screen and Madam Poppy Pomfrey pushing her cart filled with potions and candy. Ron’s in bed with a bandaged leg, and there’s a bottle of the revolting Skele-gro to hand. Meanwhile, up in the clock tower, Harry and Hermione are using the Time-Turner™. Kids twist the tower’s turret to make the clock’s hands spin and travel back in time for another magical adventure. The top and bottom halves of the set detach so other modules can be stacked in between, and the set connects with others in the series to create an entire Hogwarts Castle.

RRP: €49.99 / $49.99 / £44.99

The Box

The box measures 378 x 258 x 54 mm and weighs 670 grams. Inside we find 4 numbered bags, the instructions and a tiny sticker sheet. The instructions builds the set in 87 steps on 80 pages. The pdf can be downloaded here. Despite LEGO.com mentioning that the set can be connected to the other Hogwarts sets, this is not shown anywhere on the box. In the instructions, only the sets from the first wave are shown, so I have no idea where to put the hospital wing.

The Parts

The set contains 508 parts and 31 spares, in 27 colors, and 32 part categories, with a total of 156 unique parts/color combinations.
Main colors are:

  • Tan: 30 unique parts, 153 quantity.
  • White: 23 unique parts, 70 quantity.
  • Dark Tan: 18 unique parts, 65 quantity.
  • Reddish Brown: 13 unique parts, 21 quantity.

The Build

We start off with the floor, directly going into the full width. I'm not sure why the Plate 8 x 8 with Grille is used. Maybe to give the floor a tiled structure? Bag 1 starts off the walls and makes the beds. If only the 60330-1 Hospital had a floor like this with just beds to house the patients, that would have made the set a lot better! As you can see, the 3 floor plates are connected by hinges. This makes the set a lot more open, with room to play around. Ron is also introduced in this bag, with a casted leg.

Bag 2 finishes the first floor. I was very surprised to find out that in 20 years of LEGO Harry Potter, this is the first appearance of Madam Pomfrey. I like the look of the outside wall. It's nothing special, but does give the right vibe.

Bag 3 brings Harry and Hermione, who is carrying the time-turner from The Prisoner of Azkaban. The old treasure chest gets a new lid, turning it into a trunk.

We get a number of small side-builds that add to the playability, including a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans and a jar of Skele-Gro that will re-grow the bones in Harry's arm. I love the little skeleton baby head. I hope we'll see it back in a Halloween set this year. I'm terrible with remembering names, so I'm not sure if the owl is a specific character or a 'regular' animal.

Bag 3 finishes with 2 roof-sections and a removable beam that holds the sections together when the module is placed in the larger castle.

Down to the final bag, that brings us the clock tower. The dish has been used before in 2019's 75948-1 Hogwarts Clock Tower. There is a small red mark showing what the top side is. The hands of the clock are connected to gears that lead to one of the spires on top, so you can move them around.

Conclusion

I can keep it short: It's a nice build, that brings exactly what you expect from a set in this price-range. The set looks very nice, and captures the look of a hospital wing very well. The module fits in nicely within the rest of Hogwarts, but is different not to feel as a repeat. There are many details with call-backs to the books and movies, and I'm glad to see Madam Pomfrey, one of the few people that can tell Dumbledore to get out without being mean. Speaking of minifigs: I would have loved a petrified/stoned Hermione in this set.

I do feel there could have been done more if the set was not limited by the modular design. The possibility to fold open the module makes up for this in a large part, but I hope we're getting a 'full' set of the Hospital Wing at some point.

The set fits in with the other modules. Like I said in the The Box section, there is no mention to find on where to add the module, so I just went with my gut. If I can give one critism: Aside from the bedroom, all sets feature a full roof section, including the 3 sets that are announced. This means the castle is only growning sideways. I would like some filler-sets to make the castle higher. I know, the goal of the castle is playability, and going upwards might give stability issues, but still. A way to bring more stability is going in a corner. The hospital wing is capable of doing that, as long as you make sure the modules above and below are bendable too, or on a split between 2 modules.

Make sure you post up the completed MOC/Alternate build when you get it done
I always want to do things like that, but I buy too much already.

Nice little build, especially the clock tower, but the roof sections on either side seem rather bare.

love the clock setup. Would be a great use to MOC a large clock tower in a city display. Large tower like on a college campus

I got it, like I get all LEGO H.P. sets, and this was one of my favorites recently.  The idea of putting hinges in helps those that create all in 1 castle play sets and/or display piece, plus of course Madam Pomfrey is cool as well.  The gears for the clock to the spire are well done, but I wish that there was a reasonably straight forward way to drive both hands independently in smaller sets like this (and Big Ben...)
    Thanks for the good review.

Great to have an alternative location to increase the Hogwarts build. Clever use of the city street railings for the classic looking end bed frames. Just wish the left and right attic had a floor to increase play-ability with a longer sloping roof to match Chamber of Secrets.
To increase height, they should have the full collection of house dorms to go with 40452 Gryffindor Dorm, and corresponding common rooms, allowing a full middle layer to be built in your photo.

I agree with Lenarex, these sets look much better when seen looking at them all together.

I always love the harry potter sets and this one is pretty good. Congratulations on the last 2 pictures.
However, I still don't understand why they abandoned the dark bluish gray colour for the roofs. I find that the sand green colour makes the whole thing look bland and joins the old-fashioned side of the first versions of the harry potter sets.

Thanks for the last 2 photos. Indeed, these sets go well with each other. It was interesting to look at them all together.

Buena reseña, estoy de acuerdo contigo en que deberían hacer más altos los conjuntos de este tipo.

Dang. I love the look of this set… but the thought of a single penny going to JK Rowling’s hate campaign means I cannot touch it.

Don't let her opinions on anything, affect what you like!  If you like the worlds that she created and Warner Brothers and LEGO have re-created and even expanded on, enjoy it, despite her, not because of her!

Agreed, granted I don't know how much of the sales from the LEGO product go to Warner Bros. and LEGO as opposed to J.K. Rowling but I'm sure getting this set wouldn't give her more power. Two of my three MOCs so far relate to the LGBTQIA+ community and I've dedicated significant attention to them in other areas of my life so I think I know what I'm talking about. :)
