Introduction

It's been a while since I've built a Monkie Kid set. The last one was 80043-1 Yellow Tusk Elephant from 2023, based on Season 4 of the show. In the months after, either other sets came on my path, or other writers picked sets from the theme to review. And to be honest, I didn't really mind.

The review of 80043-1 left me a bit disappointed. The set didn't seem to meet the (very high) standards the theme had set for itself with previous sets, and I was kinda hesitant to try another one (despite some looking very promising). But something in the looks of today's set, 80058-1 Celestial Pagoda, made me reconsider. I'm not sure what it is that drew me to this set, but I suspect the apparent height plays a role. I'm curious to find if this pagoda can bring me back on team Monkie Kid. The set comes in a wave of 4, based on the events of season 5 of the show.

As of writing, the show has been released, but I'll keep the following bit hidden to avoid spoilers. Click here to open the section.

The Set

Enchant fantasy fans and kids aged 10+ with a detail-packed building toy to explore as a creative family bonding activity in this Celestial Pagoda (80058) LEGO® Monkie Kid™ set. The cool gift has a pagoda with 6 levels in 4 sections, including a prison, library, a detailed throne in the throne room, a tower room with a Color Stone holder, and much more. This set includes 7 minifigures: Nüwa (with a Color Stone headpiece), Monkie Kid, Mei, Pigsy, Mr. Tang, Sandy, Li Jing, plus Baby Mo the cat.

Kids get an easy, intuitive building adventure with the LEGO Builder app. They can zoom in and rotate models in 3D, save sets and track progress. This set also works with others in the range (each sold separately) to encourage new stories. It’s a fun present for boys and girls who love large building sets full of special details.

Inspired by the classic Journey to the West novel, LEGO Monkie Kid toys are a way for adults to share the Monkey King legend with children in a modern, playful way.

The Box

The box measures 480 x 378 x 94 mm and weighs 2300 grams. Inside we find 12 numbered paper bags, an unnumbered plastic bag with large parts, and a cardboard sleeve with 2 sticker sheets and 2 building manuals. The pdf can be downloaded here.

The Parts

The set contains 1621 parts and 64 spares, in 40 colors, and 37 part categories, with a total of 389 unique parts/color combinations.

The Colour Stones can be found across the 4 sets of the wave. Green comes in 80055-1, Blue and Red in 80056-1, and Purple in 80057-1. Set 80058-1 however contains all of them, including Yellow.

The Minifigs

We're treated to 7 minifigs (and baby Mo). The MK team comes with a new outfit and are all numbered. Notably #3 is missing. This is Monkey King, which can be found in his new outfit in set 80056-1. I'm a bit disappointed Sandy no longer comes as a BigFig, but in minifig form the character is more poseable and probably lowers the price tag of the set. Despite all wearing the same tracksuit, Pigsy didn't receive a recolor in Flat Silver for his medium legs like the rest, but has to make due with Dark Bluish Grey. They could at least have printed the legs?

The set introduces 2 new characters: Li Jing who carries around the Pagoda, and the goddess Nüwa who carries the Colour Stones.

1x Li Jing

1x Mei, White and Flat Silver Suit

1x Monkie Kid, White and Flat Silver Suit

1x Mr. Tang, White and Flat Silver Suit

1x Nüwa

1x Pigsy

1x Sandy, Flat Silver Legs

The Build

We start off with the main character and Nüwa, along with what seem to be small side builds.

Then we move to the main event, the Pagoda. We start at the bottom, where the dungeons contain some prison cells. I don't remember seeing a reference to the golden weapons in the show, but the animation is very fast-paced and I had to read the subs as well.

A staircase is added to the front to reach the main gate, and the side-builds become literal side builds, as they are added to the sides of the build.

Be careful where you tread, as there is a trapdoor.

At the first floor we find 2 closets with tiles depicting scenes, I suspect they are from The Journey To The West the Monkie Kid theme is based on.

The tiles are held in place by a small assembly from Technic parts. Or is this a sibling of the Rebrickable Bot?!? Let's pour a cup of tea while we discuss this. But what is that eye-thing in the corner?

I love the looks of the side-ways placed golden fence pieces. They work great with the Bright Light Blue, Lavender and Tan.

In the show, the pagoda is littered with doors that randomly lead to other doors. We only get 3 here, including one in the ceiling/floor. And more of those eye-thingies? Love the looks of those vases.

And at the end of book 1 we have a pretty large model. It simply looks beautiful! It's a great color-combination, and breathes Chinese (inspired) architecture (as far as I can judge that as a Dutch guy).

But we're not done yet. Book 2 adds more floors to the Pagoda. And where the base is one model, the remaining floors are modular and can be taken off. We start with a library, where rounded plates form the base of scrolls fitted in cupboards.

The Pagoda is now so high we've reached the clouds.

The next floor is the throne room, where Mo feels right at home.

For a throne room, the space is pretty cramped. And even more eyes! These belong to the 100-eyed demon, another baddie from the show, featured in minifig form in sets 80055-1 and 80057-1.

We've reached the top, where we find sort of a shrine that can hold the Yellow Stone. In the show, the Yellow Stone is hidden in a lotus flower, and the shrine can use a 39262 Crown / Flower / Egg Shell Half. Maybe the lotus was not in the concept art the set is based on, and was added later to the show?

The modular floors are held together using plates with bars.

Conclusion

The result is an impressively high model for a play set, standing 62.3 cm tall.

I love the looks of this set. It's not often we get a model this high and sleek in a 'normal' playset. The color scheme is pretty unusual, but works to give a mystical look, as this Pagoda is not standing in our own realm. Despite the size, the space for play is a bit limited. The upper floors have a small footprint, and the lower ones are tricky to reach into the back as these are not modular. That will of course not be an issue for people who use the set as a display piece.

In the show, all walls are covered with doors, and we get just 3 here. On the plus side, we do get more other details like the library. The shrine could use some additional dressing up, but the available space is very limited.

The minifig selection is great, with most of team MK present, as well as the 2 main baddies (and some eyes from a 3rd). Monkie Kid is known for the detailed printing of the figs, and this set is no exception. My main complaint would be that although looking great, you have no idea what any of the details mean if you haven't watched the show. Of course, children are creative and can come up with their own stories, but some information in the building manual would be welcome. Overall, I'm satisfied with the build and the end result.

I'm glad I've picked up this set, as it shows how unique the theme can be. The set features only a building, so I'll be reviewing the vehicle-based set 80055-1 Monkie Kid's Team Power Truck soon as well.

I'd like to see what 2 sets built back to back look like in a city layout and I'd like to see a side by side comparison with the Daily Bugle for scale

Good review, I looked at buying the set not because of the theme, but because of the looks and part colors.

I followed the series from the start and I had trouble finding the new episodes, I admit to being a little lost but I find the theme quite nice.
